Insights from the ground up

Thoughtful landscaping is about more than materials and layouts. It’s about how a space functions, feels, and lasts over time. Here, we share practical insights and real project stories to help you make informed decisions for your outdoor space.

Across much of Ontario's Lake Huron shoreline, landscapes are shaped as much by place as by preference. From Port Franks to Grand Bend to Bayfield to Goderich to Kincardine, many of the properties we work on are cottages, recreational retreats or permanent homes in lakeside communities. These sites often share similar qualities: mature trees, shaded areas, and a strong desire for low-maintenance outdoor spaces. In these environments, moss is often overlooked. Some people even see it as a nuisance to be managed. Yet it is one of the most practical and quietly beautiful plants we can use. When designed intentionally, moss fits naturally into Lake Huron landscapes and solves problems that traditional turf and groundcovers struggle with. Why Moss Belongs In Lake Huron Landscapes Lake Huron properties frequently include shaded areas, mature trees, damp soils, and spaces where turf struggles. Moss thrives in these conditions and offers solutions where traditional plants fall short. Here are four reasons why moss may be a perfect solution as part of a well thought out landscape design. 1. Perfect for Shade, Trees, and Challenging Areas Many properties include north-facing yards or dense tree cover. These spaces are challenging for grass and many groundcovers, but are ideal for moss. Moss naturally grows in low-light environments and does not compete aggressively with tree roots. Moss works especially well: under mature trees along shaded walkways in woodland gardens around rock outcrops and natural stone Instead of forcing grass to grow in places it does not want to, moss allows the landscape to feel natural and relaxed. 2. Low Maintenance One of the biggest advantages of moss is how little maintenance it requires. Once established, moss does not need mowing, fertilizing or regular irrigation (it does need moisture). This makes it an excellent option for homeowners who want a polished landscape without constant upkeep. It quietly fills space, stays green, and looks great over time. 3. Sustainability Moss fits naturally into any conversation about sustainability. It's many environmental benefits include: no need for chemical fertilizers or pesticides minimal water requirements once established improved moisture retention in surrounding soil reduced erosion on slopes Moss supports a more resilient and environmentally responsible landscape. 4. Soft Texture and Timeless Beauty Stone features are a cornerstone of many of the landscapes we design along Lake Huron. Flagstone patios, pathways, steps, retaining elements, and accent boulders (including moss rock) are popular for their durability and timeless appearance. Moss pairs exceptionally well with stone by: softening joints between flagstone reducing visual hardness around steps and walls creating a settled, natural look that feels established accentuating boulders and other garden features Whether the design leans rustic or contemporary, moss adds texture and balance without competing for attention. Is Moss Right For Your Garden? Moss is not meant to replace every lawn or planting area. However, in a shaded, damp, or low-traffic areas it often outperforms traditional options while requiring far less effort. If you have heavy tree cover, want lower garden maintenance, and/or a calm, timeless aesthetic, moss may be the perfect addition to your landscape. Moss does not shout for attention, and that is part of its beauty. It supports the garden quietly, adding texture, colour, and balance. With the right design and high-quality materials, moss can transform overlooked areas into some of the most peaceful spaces in your landscape. If you are curious about including moss in your garden, get in touch with us through our inquiry form or call our office to start the conversation.

In the classic fairy tale, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, only certain things are "just right". But when it comes to landscaping projects, we will consider all shapes, sizes and types of things to make your landscape right for you. Have a bigger, more complex, fully integrated landscape project? We have the skill, experience and capabilities to design, build and care for it. Have a simple project in mind, or even a singular thing you want done? We can do those too. And unlike Goldilocks, we are more than happy to take those on. For example, we do things as simple as pressure wash a walkway or lift, level and re-lay a small patio area (we've done areas as small as 100 sq ft). We've done lawn repairs, including over seeding areas or laying new sod. We've also planted additional plants, shrubs and trees into already existing gardens or created new, small garden beds. We can do something as simple as install mulch to refresh a garden and help protect and nurture it. Other smaller things we've been tasked to do include supplying decorative rock or install a simpler water feature, including bubbling rocks. As for landscape projects, we have a saying that we will take on any sized project and budget. We just won't sacrifice quality to do so. Even if your budget is tight, we are happy to work with you to get the most out of it. We've done plenty of budget-friendly projects to install a patio, driveway or walkway. We can also do smaller retaining wall projects, upgrade or install a new fire pit and design and install an outdoor shower. It is true that some of our projects require a plan, which is priced separately (plans start as low as $750), however many of these small projects do not require a paid for plan. If you're unsure about the size of your project, give us a call. We'd be happy to give you our initial thoughts on the feasibility of your project. One of the keys is the complexity of the project and how many elements it has. If your idea for your space include two or more elements, it will almost always require a paid for plan. You may think these projects aren't "good enough" for us. They are. There really is no such thing as "too big" or "too small" for us. They are almost always "just right". We love helping people in our community create lasting memories through the thoughtful planning and installation of outdoor living spaces. No matter the size of your project, or the simplicity or complexity of it, give us a call.

What do the numbers on a bag of fertilizer, such as 20-8-12, mean? These labels can be too much like secret codes, and it's easy to assume that higher numbers means more results. Healthy gardens are less about fertilizer and more about using the right product, at the right time, in the right way to contribute to soil and ecosystem health. Let's break it down. The numbers represent the percentage, by weight, of the three major nutrients plants need most: Nitrogen (N), Phosphorous (P), and Potassium (K). And the easiest way to think about these things is "up, down and all around"

Let’s Talk About Your Outdoor living Space.

 Softscape & Hardscape Services

From initial design through installation, we create outdoor spaces that balance beauty, function, and longevity. Our work brings together softscape and hardscape elements to create landscapes that are thoughtfully designed and built to be enjoyed.
